At least once a month, I take a 3 hours long train ride to spend time with my family. It’s my escape from the hectic capital of Romania. I’d go to my grandparents’ house and we’d just hang out, talking about different things.  My grandparents are the sweetest ever.

The past months I’ve been planning to make a video about my grandparents. I keep filming them and ask them questions about their youth, marriage, jobs and so on. It’s a lovely journey that made me realize how important little things are. It used to be them the ones who kept asking questions, but now I keep buzzing around. I am trying to find out how they started dating, but they keep making jokes about it and won’t really answer. They’ve been married for over 50 years and they are still one of my favorite couple. So I thought: why not get advice from some experienced people that I also trust?

I rarely see couples like them nowadays. But that`s not the point. What I want to share with you is so very basic that we forgot about it. Sometimes I want to high five them for all the inspiration they give me. If there would be a word that would describe their relationship that would definitely be kindness. There’s also patience and a lot of compromise in their relationship but, all in all, this is thanks to the fact that they choose to keep their other half happy, as simple as that, not trying to prove anything.

I really didn`t intend to write about marriage while pointing out acts of kindness in my grandparents’ relationship, but here I am, doing that exact thing. Either way, keep in mind this vows: “I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in poor. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life”. When my grandma got sick she couldn’t do all the things she used to do. She suffered suffered from arthritis, a disease that made using her hangs painful. She couldn’t make her bed, cook, clean or even walk. The moment this happened, my grandpa, who I’ve never seen cooking, started doing all those things. He used to wake up early in the morning, make coffee, and go to my grandma’s bed and hand it to her. Imagine, my grandpa wasn’t even a coffee drinker. He became the man chopping onions and other vegetables, doing dishes or making the bed. One day, he even ordered a cream he had seen at teleshopping, just hoping it would make my grandma healthy again. I remember when he sadly told me about it and the fact that it was just a lie, because it’s not actually working. He was so upset. My grandma got better though, after starting her treatment, but my grandpa is still the one who makes her bed every evening. I could also go on telling you stories about my grandma’s acts of kindness. How sweet and careful they are with each other. But this is not the point now. This article should just make you think about your loved ones and about the people you meet every day. I became an observer. I’ve noticed that people nowadays are so angry that they even forget to smile. I know everybody is struggling. Every single one of us has their own set of problems, but what if we keep this in mind next time we throw an angry look at someone and, instead, we just smile back? How about we listen more? Let’s start focusing on the beautiful things in the people around us. Let’s switch the focus!

So tell me what makes you a kind person? (I would love to read your answer in the comments section.)

A couple of days ago I was on my way to lunch when the wind blew off an old lady’s hat. The hat flew by my head and went in the middle of the street. I ran after it and finally caught it.
The old lady was very thankful and her smile made my day.
